Introduction

You have the option to add up to 19 custom category types. This feature gives you greater control over how you classify your securities and present them to your clients.

Do not delete the following category types:

These category types can be renamed, but they are necessary for our reporting system and should not be deleted.

Because categories are customizable, your list of categories may not match exactly those displayed on this page.

Create a Category Type

To create a new category:

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Click Create Category Type.

  3. In the Category Type box, type the name of the category type you want to create - for example, Sector.

Add a Category to a Category Type

Once you've created a category type, follow these steps to add a category:

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Click Edit Categories next to the category type where you want to add a category.

  3. Click Create Category.

  1. In the Category box, type a name of the category - for example, Growth - Large.

  1. Click Create.

Assign a Benchmark to a Category

To assign a benchmark to a category:

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Click Edit Categories next to the category type that contains the category where you want to assign a benchmark.

  3. Click Edit next to the category where you want to assign a benchmark.

  4. In the Benchmark list, select the benchmark you want to use. For a complete list of available benchmark indexes, visit List of Available Indexes.

  5. When finished, click Save.

Change the Order That Categories Types Appear on Reports

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Use your mouse to drag each category type to the proper location. Alternately, you can type the display order in the Order box.

Change the Order that Categories Appear on Reports

In Advisor View, you can set the order in which reports display security categories. For example, when you sort by asset class on the Holdings report, the report displays asset classes held in that account or group in the order you set. This allows you to organize categories on reports according to firm standards and create a consistent and cohesive reporting package.

On the Account Performance report, you can include categories on line and bar charts.

To help keep the charts from being overwhelmed with many categories, you can set how many categories the chart displays using Include ___ Categories/Accounts. This setting shows you the categories based on the category sort order you've designated.

For example, using the custom sort order above, if you set Include ___ Categories to 5, you'd see:

To change the order that categories appear on your reports:

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Click Edit Categories next to the category type where you want to change the order of the underlying categories.

  3. Use your mouse to drag each category to the proper location. Alternately, you can type the display order in the Order box.

Use a Category Type and Its Underlying Categories in Compliance Reporting

The Compliance ADV report uses the category type and its underlying categories when calculating asset class information. To establish a category type for use in compliance reporting, follow these steps: 

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Categories.

  2. Select Use For ADV next to the category type you want to use in compliance reporting. You may only select one category type.

Assign a Category to a Security

To assign a category to a security:

  1. On the Setup menu, under Security Settings, click Securities.

  2. Click on the name of the security where you want to assign a category. If you select more than one security, you'll need to assign the same categories to the selected securities. Otherwise, you'll want to select the securities one at a time.

  3. On the Reporting tab, choose the appropriate categories for each of the category types listed.

  4. If using multiple categories for the same security, click and select the appropriate category in the list.

  5. Add a Percent allocation for each category. The total for each category type must equal 100%

  6. Designate the Primary category if using multiple categories. This will be the category used for reports that don't support multiple categories or when you don't enable multiple categories in reports that do.

  7. Click Save.

Set a Category for a Separately Managed Account

To assign categories to an SMA:

  1. On the Accounts menu, click Accounts.

  2. Click the name of the account where you want to specify a category.

  3. On the Advanced menu of the pane that displays, click Separately Managed Account.

  4. In the SMA category lists, select the desired categories.

  5. Click Save.
